We did not let Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa to become the President or the Prime Minister, and in the similar manner, we will not let him defeat the 20th Amendment to the Constitution, Transport Minister Gamini Lokuge said.
Addressing a rally on Tuesday under the theme ’20 Paradawamu’, Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa said all efforts will be made to defeat the proposed 20A. He also said the government was compelled to amend several sections of the draft bill following the pressure exerted by the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB).
The party which Mr. Premadasa contested suffered a heavy loss. As the result of which, the UNP too was brought to zero for the first time in history.
“The UNP founded by late D.S. Senanayake and Dudley Senanayake and they brought peace to the country and faced defeat in 1970. However, they suffered a great humiliation in the recently concluded election,” Minister Lokuge said.
He said if Sajith Premadasa elected as the President, there won’t be room even for media to act independently.
